Dr.-Ing. Bassam Alrifaee
BIO
Dr. Bassam Alrifaee is a Senior Researcher and Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at RWTH Aachen University (RWTH), Germany. He is the founding director of the Cyber-Physical Mobility (CPM) group and the CPM Lab at RWTH. In 2023, he held a visiting scholar position with Professor Andreas Malikopoulos’ Information and Decision Science (IDS) lab at the University of Delaware, USA. Dr. Alrifaee earned his Diploma degree in Computer Science from the Technical University of Ilmenau, Germany, and his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from RWTH in 2010 and 2017, respectively. His research in cyber-physical mobility systems focuses on (i) distributed predictive control, (ii) service-oriented architectures for control systems, and (iii) applications of (i) and (ii) to Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs).
He is a recipient of the starting grant for early-career researchers from the German Research Foundation (DFG) Research Training Group 1856: Integrated Energy Supply Modules for On-Road Electromobility. Dr. Alrifaee has secured several DFG research grants, including projects in the Priority Program 1835: Cooperatively Interacting Automobiles and the Collaborative Research Centre Transregio 339: Digital Twin of the Road System. He has also received an individual research grant. As a Principal Investigator, Dr. Alrifaee leads a project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and serves as a Co-Principal Investigator for two projects funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Additionally, he has been the Principal Investigator for two projects funded by industrial partners. Dr. Alrifaee is a recipient of a teaching grant from the Exploratory Teaching Space of RWTH.
In his advisory role, Dr. Alrifaee's PhD student, Patrick Scheffe, was awarded the Young Research Award 2023 by the Intelligent Transportation Systems Society Germany Chapter for outstanding work in the CPM Lab. Currently, Dr. Alrifaee serves as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Vehicles and holds Senior Member status within the IEEE.
